Monotype - The Most Painterly Form of Printmaking

Students will use special pigment-dense soy-based water-soluble Akua Color paint alone and with modifiers to change it's behaviour.  AkuaKolor can be made to act in a manner similar to drybrush or wet-in-wet watercolor.  The colors are blendable and may be made to be more or less transparent. The paint remains 'open' and is slow drying on non-soluble surfaces, allowing the artist exceptionally long working time before drying. This medium is very responsive to indicating the brush stroke, and records the characteristics of the brush when rendered from the Lexan plate to the Arches paper in reverse image print form.  This overall technique is called the "Additive" form of monotype.

Alternatively, students will explore the "Subtractive" form of monotype.  In this technique, dense intaglio ink is rolled onto the Lexan plate, and the artist uses any number of implements, or even the fingers,  to selectively remove ink to varying degrees, thus yielding gray values as it allows the paper to show through those areas when printed. Both of these techniques (Additive and Subtractive)  are frequently employed in the same composition allowing the artist unlimited breadth of artistic expression.  (Class size:  6  min. – 12 max.)

Adult Clay Sculpture

In this workshop the student will create and finish two projects.   During the first class, students will hand build a stepping stone and/or garden sign.  In the second class the student will use a coil technique or hollow out a solid piece of clay to make a toad or turtle, etc. to guard your garden.  Cubes, spheres and rectangular boxes will be the building blocks.  Students will also learn how to store and keep their unfinished work moist (too wet is not okay, just right is learned).  The instructor will help the students learn to check for air bubbles which can cause explosions and/or cracks during firing.  The instructor will do a slow firing to be sure all the students’ pieces are dry.  (The instructor will be taking the projects off the premises to be fired and will need assistance from the students in loading the projects into her vehicle.)  The third week will be for glazing or painting the now bisque-fired student pieces.  Please note:  students must transport their materials and projects home each week as the gallery does not have storage space for these projects. .

A former USA Today photo editor, Judy G. Rolfe has established herself as a well-known freelance photographer in the Washington, D.C. and Delmarva areas. In 1992, she decided to leave her steady career as a photo editor and attempt to make a living looking through a camera lens rather than a photo loupe.
Judy received her first camera from her parents at age 14 and has been shooting pictures ever since. Her leap into freelance photography was the realization of a life-long dream. Her photography career is now a way of life, taking her on jobs all over the United States and, most recently, to China, Indonesia, Central and South America, the Balkans, and West Africa.
Impossible to imagine her life without a camera in it Judy is excited by the many doors the digital age is opening for her and the most recent one being digital photography workshops.
Judy likes teaching since its presents her with the opportunity to serve as mentor and guide to those who want to pursue photography as a passion and career.   (Class size: 4 min - 6 max.) .
